Responsibilities

• Hosts
  Sometimes called maitre d’s, restaurant hosts and hostesses are usually the first point of contact for diners. Hosts explain restaurant hours, locations and food specialties, answer phones, accept reservations, and make note of guest preferences. They greet guests upon arrival, clarify table and food preferences, and provide menus. They then assign tables, seat guests and make sure that food servers approach for orders. By communicating frequently with servers, management and kitchen staff, hosts ensure that customers have a pleasant experience. They also inspect restrooms to ensure cleanliness and the availability of supplies.
• Servers
  Food servers, more commonly known as waiters and waitresses, usually start their shifts by meeting with restaurant managers and other staff to discuss new items and procedures. They also greet customers, present menus and explain the day’s specials. They take orders to the kitchen staff and relay any special preferences that customers may have. After the meals are prepared, they carry orders to the patron’s tables. Throughout the meal, they refill customer beverages, take away used plates and utensils, and ask about the dining experience. After the meal, they tally customer orders, hand the check to customers and accept payment.

• Helpers
  Dining room and bartender helpers, also known as busses or busboys, keep tables clean and tidy for patrons. They set up tables with clean linens, plates and utensils, and condiments, re-arrange chairs and tables to accommodate groups; and remove any spilled food or beverages near dining areas. They may serve water, beverages, bread and butter to patrons, refill drink and ice dispensers, and restock serving areas with supplies. At the end of the meal, they clear tables and carry soiled plates and utensils to the kitchen, wipe tables and chairs, and reset tables.
• Bartenders
  Bartenders reign over the beverages in restaurants and bars by serving drinks to customers directly or through wait staff. They take drink orders, check the identification of customers to ensure they are of legal drinking age, pour beverages directly from bottles, and mix drinks according to recipes and customer preferences. Depending on the size of their establishments, they also clean bars and tables, wash glassware and utensils, order supplies, and refill stocks from back rooms.
